Shaker Museum Alfred, Maine - Saturday

Alfred, Maine was home to the first Shaker Village in Maine, it is no longer in operation, but is run as a museum by a very nice group of volunteers. The Shakers from this village moved to the village at Sabbathday Lake Maine where there are still 2 shakers living there.

The Shakers at Alfred made fine spinning wheels

The Shakers were celibate so many new members were brought to the village as orphans.

Alfred is a really nice town and has 48 houses on the National Historic Register - to learn more: http://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/shaker/alf.htm

Moffit-Ladd House - Portsmouth, NH - Saturday

National Historic Landmark celebrating its 250th birthday in 2013.  The house has been an historic house museum for more than 100 years, having first opened its doors to the public in June of 1912. One of America's finest Georgian mansions, the house was built for merchant John Moffatt between 1760 and 1763. During the Revolution, it was the home of General William Whipple, one of New Hampshire's three signers of the Declaration of Independence and his wife Katharine Moffatt Whipple. In 1817 the house passed to John Moffatt's great granddaughter, Maria Tufton Haven Ladd. Her son, Alexander Hamilton Ladd, lived in the house from 1862 until his death in 1900. The house is furnished to showcase its original features and to reflect its use as a private home from 1763 through 1900.
This  house is directing in front of the Piscataqua River where we got on the Harbor Cruise boat ride

Navy Prison - now closed - known as the toughest Navy prison in the USA when in operation. Here is a story about Humphrey Bogart:  Bogart was injured while on assignment to take a naval prisoner to Portsmouth Naval Prison in Kittery, Maine. Supposedly, while changing trains in Boston, the handcuffed prisoner asked Bogart for a cigarette and while Bogart looked for a match, the prisoner raised his hands, smashed Bogart across the mouth with his cuffs, cutting Bogart's lip, and fled. The prisoner was eventually taken to Portsmouth. An alternate explanation, is that in the process of uncuffing an inmate, Bogart was struck in the mouth when the inmate wielded one open, uncuffed bracelet while the other was still on his wrist.
By the time Bogart was treated by a doctor, the scar had already formed.
